Psychological First Aid
Overview
From the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami to Typhoon Nargis, the people of Southeast Asia have suffered a variety of natural disasters in recent years. Armed conflicts in parts of the region also contribute to the potential for manmade disaster in its many forms. Immediate, post-disaster mental health services are likely to be delivered by non-mental health professionals. This module explores the mental health consequences of disasters, the research on psychological first aid and post-disaster mental health. PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID skills are taught through role-playing with students.
